What makes a beetle a baja
You do it for a living and are being paid well to do it. Your ego is so big that you have to say that you built the entire thing evan though it could cost you twice as much to build vs.

Earlier bugs are swing axle rear with link pin front ends, while, later bugs are irs but with a ball joint front end. I think that '68? I have heard that it is easier to make a swing axle car irs than to change a ball joint front to link pin. Your best bet would probably be to find and earlier bug and go from there. Stay away from super beetles. As far as the years go anything under 74' is smog exempt. Not the best combo. Half of 69 and newer were ball joint and IRS rears.
Ball joint spindles are stronger than link pin spindles, but the ball joints them self are weak when you over extend them. You can't get as much travel out of a ball joint as you can a link-pin. Same as the rear, IRS has the pontential of more wheel travel but has more moving parts which means more things to break.
A poorly set up rear pivits is worse than stock parts. They sell almost any kit you can think of to do anything you want in any direction with the bug.
If you are going to fully cage the car and can support the front end well, mounting the link-pin on a ball-joint front end is as easy as anything else when you cut out the tunnel. The popular Baja Bug style of modification originated when tuners opted to skip the hassle of taking the powertrain out of a Beetle and putting it into a dune buggy, and instead just made the Beetle capable of going off-road itself.
The big wheels, cut fenders, loud exhaust, exposed engine, steel tube bumpers, stripped interior - all the things that help them perform off-road also help make them look so antisocial on the street. This particular example is about as good looking as they get. All of the modifications are tasteful and functional, especially the cc stroker engine with dual Weber carbs.
